“No one else asks us what we think†was something I heard from students as well. I would point out, though, that lots of 18-21 year olds around the world don't like to talk politics. U.S. college students eyes often glaze over at the first mention of republicans or democrats. You have to find a way to make it personal.

Writing the date on the board. that's a good trick. I used to use that when I was teaching university kids.
Though at that time, it was used as my response to them saying "Japan doesn't remember history!"

it could be a beijing thing- everyone talks about 6/4 (and refers to it as 6/4) in shanghai. or maybe just the cabbies and the students? though a lot of people do think the students were in the wrong.
